The Theme: Housing for the poor

It is said that there are more than 1 billion homeless people in the world and there are nearly 2 billion people who are compelled to live in inadequate housing conditions. It is the purpose of the design competition to inquire into these communities of the urban poor / underprivileged people.

The student participants shall study the community to understand the complexity of issues involved, and plan and design for its up-gradation / reconstruction / development.

The design requires planning and design for a community of about 1000 to 1200 dwelling units or so situated in a site covering a maximum area of about 10 ha. The housing typology and units may vary as per the social, economic and environmental context. The housing typology and units may vary from 15 sq.mt., 30 sq.mt., 45 sq.mt., 50 sq.mt. to 60 sq.mt. (three to five types) should be affordable to the urban poor, energy efficient and climate responsive.

The design of housing units, community structure, facilities, infrastructure, pedestrian and vehicular access and quality of living environment are the key concerns.
